Organizing posts into a series

How multipart writeups stay ordered and connected without adding a CMS or database.

Some subjects need more room than one post. A series keeps those posts connected while each part remains a normal markdown file with its own URL, metadata and place in the archive.

Adding a post to a series#

Add a series name and part number to its frontmatter:

content/posts/my-second-part.mdx
series: "Building hacking.fyi"
seriesOrder: 2

Every part uses the exact same series name. seriesOrder controls reading order, independent of publication date, and must be a unique positive integer within the series.

What the site generates#

The frontmatter is enough to produce:

  • an entry on the series index,
  • an ordered page for Building hacking.fyi,
  • a complete part list below each article, and
  • previous and next links between adjacent parts.

Series pages and their posts also appear in the sitemap. Draft parts remain visible during local development, but production builds leave them out until they are published.
